Labour calls for Aviation Minister's removal

The trade union movement has backed calls for the removal of the Minister of Aviation, Dr. Babalola Borishade, as part of efforts to sanitise the aviation sector.

The trade union movement has backed calls for the removal of the Minister of Aviation, Dr. Babalola Borishade, as part of efforts to sanitise the aviation sector.

Joining the roll of those calling for the removal of the minister are: the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers; Food, Beverages and Tobacco Senior Staff Association; Trade Union Congress of Nigeria; and National Union of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employees.

Speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, the Deputy Prseident of PENGASSAN, Mr. Peter Esele, said that after critical appraisal of various air mishaps that had occurred in the last three months, it was imperative that the minister be removed.

He said, 'There are a lot of things that went wrong. Is the minister going to say that during his visits to most of the airports immediately he assumed office, he did not notice that there was no good infrastructure on ground? Did he ask for situation reports of the sector when he assumed office and if he did; what steps did he take to forestall dangers?"

He accused government of continued insensitivity, irresponsible and lackadaisical attitude to public cries on the frequent mishaps, carnage, and near misses being experienced in the nation's transport sector.

The association threatened to embark on some actions to ensure that the government overhauled the transport sector to guarantee free and safe transport system.
